How Should I Prepare My Skin For Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

At Devine Aesthetic Solutions in Arlington, TX, we are excited to offer a laser hair removal treatment for our clients in the DFW area, including Fort Worth, Garland, Plano, and Southlake. We use the innovative Soprano ICE™ system to remove unwanted hair from various parts of your body. This device can be used for most skin tones, plus it uses many laser wavelengths that produce smooth and long-lasting results.

Before you arrive for your treatment, you’ll need to prepare your skin for laser hair removal treatment. Internal medicine specialist Dr. Jeanine Thomas has a few recommendations for you to follow to ensure you are ready for your appointment at Devine Aesthetic Solutions.

Avoid plucking or waxing

While you might consider plucking or waxing the hair before the treatment, you will remove the hair from the root at this point. The root must be intact for the Soprano ICE system to work properly.

Shave the targeted area before your visit

You’ll need to shave the treatment area about 1 – 2 days before the appointment. We recommend you shave at least 24 hours before the appointment begins. Shaving also keeps the hair from being too visible before the treatment. There will be less risk of your skin being burned from the laser, and the hair won’t have grown out too far at this point, making it easier to treat.

Avoid bleaching the targeted area

The hair that is designated for treatment needs to be as natural as possible, so it’s best to avoid bleaching the hair or using any other cosmetic treatments. It is harder for the Soprano ICE laser to reach the hair when it is bleached or dyed. The color change adjusts the pigment, making it harder for the laser to treat.

Stop bleaching or dyeing the area about 6 – 8 weeks before your appointment. This timeframe should be enough to allow the hair root to grow back to its original color.

Keep away from the sun

The last tip for preparing for your laser hair removal process is to avoid excess sun exposure. Keep the intended treatment area away from the sun for at least 2 – 4 weeks before your treatment with Dr. Thomas.

Sun exposure can adjust the body’s skin tone, making it harder for the proper laser wavelength to work. While this procedure is not considered painful, the laser could also trigger pain and blistering if it comes in contact with tanned or burned skin.

Use sunscreen over the treated area every day for a few weeks before the appointment to ensure the site will stay safe. The sunscreen will prevent possible harm in the region.
